Cover image: Pictured is a decommissioned coal processing plant at a colliery in the Ruhr valley in Germany. This region provided much of the energy for a rapidly industrializing Germany and is now undergoing a deep structural transformation as the country shifts toward a sustainable energy system. Coal plants are symbols of industrial manufactured capital, the entire man-made physical stock pivotal for modern economies. Helga Weisz et al. introduce the Industrial Ecology Special Feature, which describes advances in understanding the transformation of manufactured capital and its ramifications for human well-being and the environment. See the Introduction to the Special Feature by Weisz et al. on pages 6260–6264. Image courtesy of Dennis Weinb?rner (Weinb?rner Fotografie, Berlin).
